Mont Temehani

Hike through forest and up a mountain for exceptional views of the surrounding landscape and sighting of a very rare flower.

The second-tallest mountain on Raiatea, Mont Temehani rises slightly from a rocky plateau. Plan a pleasant hike through the pine and tropical forest for a non-beach excursion. You’ll be rewarded with excellent views across the island and over the beautiful blue-green ocean.

The hike involves an elevation change of about 2,500 feet (770 meters) on a winding trail past native vegetation of large ferns, orchids, bamboo, pine and Tahitian chestnut trees. Bring appropriate water shoes to cross several shallow rivers. From the trail look for three waterfalls, narrow ribbons of water falling freely from between trees.

One of the biggest draws of hiking Mont Temehani is the possibility of seeing a tiny flower that grows along the path. The Tiare Apetahi exists only in this tropical habitat on this mountain on Raiatea. Its rarity gives it a mythical symbolism. Look for the five asymmetric petals of this white beauty standing above its spiky striated leaves. Be sure not to pick or damage the flower, as it is extremely endangered. Destructive actions will generate a very large fine.

At the ridgeline, the trees give way to a rocky plateau. From this vantage point and other openings along the trail look across the ocean to neighboring islands. Huahini lies to the east. Bora Bora is northwest beyond Raiatea’s sister island of Tahaa. Maupiti is farther west, occasionally visible depending on sky conditions.

Consider arranging spots on a tour with a guide to lead on this roughly 11-mile (18-kilometer) hike. This is especially desirable because the trails are not signposted and guides provide stories about the island and the Tahitian people. Organized tours often include a pickup at your hotel and lunch.

Mont Temehani lies along a ridge running north and south on the western side of the island of Raiatea. Fly to the Raiatea Airport in Uturoa and make hiking arrangements through your hotel. As you are climbing the mountain, stay on the trail and use extreme caution not to disturb the natural habitat. Bring water, snacks and sunscreen and pack out your trash. Allow about 8 hours for the round-trip hike.
