Monachil is a beautiful little village in the province of Granada about 6 miles from Granada capital city. It's the ideal place to enjoy a few days of R&R and fresh air as you discover the town’s secrets. Are you in for one of our cheap trips to Monachil?
Monachil stands out for many things and one of them is its religious heritage. Why? This is thanks to buildings such as the convent of Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo, built in 1917 on a former disused fabrics factory. This beautiful historicist-style convent belongs to the Order of the Augustinian Recollects and is home to seminarians, monks and theologians.
Another example of this heritage is the parish of La Encarnación, undoubtedly one of the icons of Monachil. Despite the various renovations and reconstructions it has undergone over the years, this temple can’t hide its clear Mudéjar origins. Take a picture by the door and then enter to discover all the hidden gems inside.
As for the civil architecture of Monachil, the Casa del Molino, the oldest standing house in the town, really stands out, built in 1450. This beautiful building stands around a square interior courtyard. Nowadays it’s home to a museum and an exhibition hall, while its gardens have been converted into a public park.
If it’s old buildings you’re looking for, the archaeological site of Cerro de la Encina is a must, from the Bronze Age. You’ll be able to admire the remnants of a fort from the Argaric culture and you’ll also enjoy some excellent views of the River Monachil towards Granada at sunset, as well as the stunning local nature.
