Travel to Mjolby if you are interested in Swedish history, or if you love sports. Swedish sports fans regularly visit this town for weekends and holidays. Mantorptravet is a horse race course with races several times a month, and Mantorp Park is a modern race course for motor racing. Mjolby is located in the county of Ostergotland in the south east of Sweden. The climate here is a little bit warmer than more northerly parts of Sweden, and reminiscent of continental Europe. Mjolby is also a railway hub, which makes it easy to get here from other towns in the vicinity.
Svartan River runs just outside the centre of town. Rent a canoe and paddle along the river in spring or summer if you're after an active holiday in Mjolby. The water is regulated, but in some sections you can even try white river rafting. Along the river you will pass historic landmarks like Ojebro Kvarnby and Bleckenstad Gard, where you can see different aspects of the areas heritage. Lake Vattern is half an hour from Mjolby by car, and here you can also go canoeing or swimming in the summer.
Closer to town you find the wild swimming spot by Lake Skogsjon which is a crystal clear dark lake surrounded by coniferous forest. You can also camp in the wild during summer and late spring. Mjolby Golf Club is perfect for a weekend for those interested in the sport, and you can relax in a beautiful environment, whether you are an experienced golfer or would just like to learn. Solberga Nature Reserve is close to Svartan River, and is a beautiful stretch of oak strewn fields and mixed forest.
If you're into Scandinavian history there's much to see on a holiday in Mjolby. Kungshogarna is a burial field from the Iron Age, where cists as old as from the Stone Age have been found.
Mjolby Church is another landmark, located in the centre of town next to Svartan. It was built in the 18th century since the previous church had been demolished after damage during a fire. Close to the church you can see Hogbystenen. This is a Viking rune stone from the 11th century which gives a fascinating insight into the life in this area a thousand years ago. Svaneholms Fortress is also worth a visit, and the medieval building is picturesquely situated with a view of Lake Kilarpesjon.
Holidays in Mjolby are well worth it all year round, thanks to the mild climate, but it's in spring and summer that the many sights in their beautiful surroundings are really at their most inviting.
