Thymus Residence is a unique and charming hotel. The hostess met us with a warm welcome and the hotel was exactly as we imagined - a charming, high end, cave experience. Thymus Residence is just such a different place to stay with breakfast taken just next door to our accommodation in a former medieval church. So many interesting features in the immediate area. We chose a cava suite at Thymus for 3 nights. Simply had to have one of the former cave rooms if you’re going to Matera! Such a different experience to staying in a regular room. But while still visibly a cave architecturally, it had every convenience to a high standard. Absolutely amazing.

Loved the hotel. Very caring and helpful managers and staff. Beautiful room, well equipped. Modern within the cave setting. Great breakfast- Matera has the best bread (and the light ricotta with fig syrup - amazing). Convenient location to everything (but note- parking is outside the old city for all hotels and a bit of a challenge to find).
