The calm, temperate waters and sheltered location of Maluaka Beach make ideal conditions for attracting Hawaii’s famous green turtles. Part of Maui’s popular “Turtle Town” which runs from Nahuna Point to Black Sand Beach, Maluaka’s discreet entrance is easy to miss, making it less crowded and more laid-back than some of its better-known neighbours.
The rockier south end of the beach is the best spot for turtle-watching. The coral reef just offshore is one of their favourite feeding grounds and your patience will usually be rewarded with a first sighting of a scaly head bobbing on the horizon, followed by more, as these inquisitive creatures come closer to shore. Green turtles are actually brownish in colour and it’s easy to mistake them for rocks, so you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled. These gentle marine giants are friendly and unafraid of humans, so they’ll usually stick around if you feel like jumping in for a closer look. Grab a snorkel for a better view as they swim through the water, diving and swooping from the surface to the seabed with surprising grace.
The protected reef is also home to a variety of tropical fish, octopi and other crustaceans, while whales can sometimes be spotted offshore, so don’t forget your snorkel and binoculars.
Nicknamed Pu’u On, meaning Sand Hills, this unspoilt stretch of gently undulating dunes fringed with kiawe trees is also a popular place for sunbathing, especially at the quieter northern end. Spread out a picnic on one of the tables on the grassy area behind the beach, or pull on your clothes and head for the nearby hotel for a more formal lunch there’s also a beachside snack bar selling light refreshments. A sunset cruise over the bay makes for a perfect end to your day.
Maluaka Beach is in Makena Bay on the southwest coast of Maui. There is on-site car parking as well as public showers and toilets. The resort has its own golf course with superb ocean views.
