This culturally rich and wonderfully scenic region boasts a privileged location along the eastern shore of the famous Dead Sea.

Madaba Governorate is best known for its incredible Byzantine-era mosaics, but there is much more to discover in this large and varied region. This scenic area is home to cultural riches, friendly locals, rich history and spectacular wildlife. For those looking to soak in the salty Dead Sea, there are few better places to do it. Start with culture in the charming capital, and then travel to the Dead Sea for pure relaxation.

Most of Madaba Governate’s key attractions lie in its capital, Madaba. Don’t miss the Basilica of St. George, home to a famous mosaic map of the Holy Land. Discovered in the late 19th century, this mosaic is often listed among the most important artifacts of early Christianity. For more mosaics, visit the Church of the Apostles, which is home to a striking depiction of an underwater scene created in A.D. 568. Get a sense of the painstaking art of mosaic-making by arranging a guided tour of the Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art & Restoration, where Jordanian artists are taught how to create and reconstruct mosaics.

The city of Madaba was selected by UNESCO to be part of the Creative Cities Network, which honors cities that emphasize creative industries and culture. In addition to its fascinating culture, the market town is renowned for its friendly locals and excellent cuisine. Make plenty of time for eating.

After seeing the major sites in the city of Madaba, head to the Dead Sea to unwind. The coast has many luxury resorts, but the public Amman Beach is an affordable option for experiencing the sea. Take advantage of the facilities at the beach club, which include lounge chairs, umbrellas, a restaurant, basketball courts, a modest amusement park and showers.

If you prefer fresher waters, drive to the lush Mujib Nature Reserve, home to waterfalls, pools and striking ravines. Hire a guide and hike through the reserve. Hikes suit all levels of ability and offer the opportunity to spot wildlife.

Set on the King’s Highway, Madaba Governorate is easily accessible by car. Drive here from Amman in less than an hour.
