Study beautiful medieval churches, wander down narrow streets in the old town and visit its many museums to learn about the history of this charming city.

Luebeck is an old city in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. Its medieval history has been preserved in beautiful churches and other architectural structures. Visit a famous 15th-century city gate or admire historic buildings. The city is great for outdoor activities, such as cycling, fishing, hot air ballooning and skydiving.

Shop for hand-made jewelry, accessories and handicrafts in a local workshop or explore museums and galleries to learn about Luebeck’s history. Luebeck is a famous leading city of the Hanseatic League, a defensive and commercial confederation of merchant guilds and market towns. With many excellent cafés and restaurants in the old town, Luebeck is great for relaxing.

Holsten Gate is one of the city’s most recognizable structures. The famous city gate was built in the mid-15th century and based on Dutch models. Notice the sunken south tower and unusual leaning angle of the gate. The structural oddity is due to the foundations sinking in the marshy ground. Stop at Holsten Gate Museum to learn more about Holsten Gate and the Hanseatic League.

St Mary’s is one of Germany’s largest churches. The striking building in the old town features Gothic brick architecture and exceptional artworks. Tour the church’s interior to see the wonderful altar, the high choir and the organ. Luebeck features several other old churches, including St Peter’s, St Jacob’s and Luebeck Cathedral.

Stop at the Museum of Natural History and the Environment to see displays on the region’s plants and animals. The museum has an impressive skeleton of a sperm whale, measuring about 46 feet (14 meters) long. Luebeck also features other notable museums and art galleries, including a fascinating theater puppet museum, called TheaterFigurenMuseum.

Discover Luebeck in the state of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany. The historic city is about 190 miles (300 kilometers) from BerlinOpens in a new window. Stay in comfortable accommodations, including luxurious hotels, self-catered apartments and vacation homes.

Visit Luebeck for spectacular medieval architecture, excellent museums and cafés with pretty courtyards.

Absolutely beautiful place! I’d studied the Holy Roman Empire and the Hanseatic League for years, and it was well worth a visit. 10/10!

Gorgeous place to visit, we didn’t do any of the things around Lubeck as we had already visited quite a lot of Germany, but a lovely old town.

A lovely compact town in the north of Germany with lots of history to look at and learn about. It's old town is easily walkable, plenty of shopping facilities and cafes are available and Marzipan lovers find themselves certainly in the right spot.
