Great location but needs improvement
It was tough call deciding within a few weeks away where to stay in Lisbon. And of course options with good reviews where already booked. I decided to give it chance and went all in with Alfama River Apartments. If you are making a decision based on the photos provided please abort. The photos are not accurate. The check in process was fast and if you follow the instructions provided before you check in, you won't have any issues. The apartment was big in size but definitely is in need of an update. It just gives the impression between being very rustic or not. Didn't like the fact that the shower needs cleaning. Also the property sells the fact that parking is free and included. This is not accurate. The location was a plus (excellent location)!

Tiny apartment
The unit did not even come close to the photos posted online. It was located on the fourth floor with stairs that were dangerously steep! The toaster did not work and the bathroom door knob was broken as the one bedroom. The positive side is that it has a great view and is very close to everything!

A steep climb but worth the effort
Very traditional building very well located for transport and walking into the city centre. We were on 4th floor and there are no lifts and the stairs are very steep, however, the apartment was worth the climb. It has a small kitchen with everything you need (washing machine, oven, microwave, fridge etc) and great views. The windows all opened allowing a through breeze to keep the place cool in 30+ degrees. Will definitely go back if the opportunity arises.

Poor Management & Backed Up Sewer Gasses in Apt.
The drain to the shower wasn't draining when we arrived, they took care of that, but then sewer gasses were backing up through the now open drain. We asked several times for them to handle it. They were very dismissive, saying it is normal in Lisbon.... Sewer gasses are dangerous and are not "normal" in residences. We had to have all the windows in the apartment open to vent the gasses the entire time we were there. They sent someone out once and they said they didn't smell the gas, so there must not be a problem. Well we had all the windows open, so you wouldn't smell it! The renting company was very dismissive and NEVER corrected the problem. I would not stay there, and would warn anyone else considering it to reflect upon whether you want to be breathing in sewer gasses from everyone else's apartment through your bathroom! Also, you should take note of how poorly we were treated when you make your decision.

Aflame River Apartments
We enjoyed our stay however, we initially had difficulty getting access to the room which was very frustrating. When you arrive to the address, there is no main office or any information about how to contact the host. The host did not answer the telephone number that was provided by hotels.com, which required us to call hotels.com several times to figure out how to contact the host. The location is good for the Alfama area.

The location was perfect, a short distance from the metro, in a lively neigbourhood, yet quiet at night. The apartment is beautiful and very well appointed. I would have given a five star rating if I had not had some difficulty contacting the owner when I needed to on a Saturday.

At the end of a steep climb and no lift (elevator)
Don't book this apartment unless you are absolutely fit. This apartment is at the end of s steep climb and on the 4th or 5th floor. After climbing the hill you have climb 4-5 floors of narrow steps to get to your apartment. I thought I was fit until I got here! This particular apartment is clean but the building it houses seems very old and run-down. The apartment has been renovated but all the stuff inside is cheap, walmart stuff. The flexible-hose shower wouldn't stay in place because the holder, although new, is cheap plastic one! The apartment has a fully-equipped kitchen. Actually, the stuff in the kitchen are of very good quality. The apartment has a nice view of the river but the climb is so taxing that I wouldn't recommend it to others unless they are very fit.

Alfama - Overlooking the harbor
This was a great little apartment looking out over the harbor in the Alfama district. We stayed on the 4th floor which is 4 sets of steep staircases up, no elevator. This worked for us and the property manager helped to get our suitcases upstairs, but for those who do not like stairs, this would not be a good apartment to stay in. The view was fantastic of the harbor and the neighborhood has a lot of charm. It is fairly quiet in the evenings and the sounds of Fado music can be heard as the restaurants nearby host Fado shows.

Very cute ancient building turned into apartment.
Bare wood everywhere. It's an old building recently (8 years?) refurbished? A little cramped. But nice. Bring anything you want in apartment, including soap. they supply no consumables.

Spring in Lisbon
Perfectly located in the old part of the city. Everything is in walking distance if desired, but the Metro is only a 5 min walk away which has connections with the rest of the city. We were met on arrival by the owner, Mauro, who was very helpful in going through the apartment facilities and local attractions. All in all a very enjoyable stay and I would highly recommend it!

Great value of money
The apartment was very confortable. Excellent location, next to a metro station. Mauro, the person in charge of the apartment, was very friendly and was very patient in spite of our late arrival. The apartment does not have a lift, so keep this in mind if you are travelling with a lot of luggage. Highly recommended.

Apartment in quirky district of old town
We found the apartment as in the photos - clean with excellent views from all the windows. It was however a little cramped for 4 people - we had to rearrange the living room to accommodate our suitcases. As mentioned by others, be prepared for some very steep staircases to the apartment. The surrounding neighbourhood is quite lively and noisy at the weekend, all night. The bathroom lacked ventilation and there was a smell of drains in both the kitchen and bathroom - this may have been down to summer though. The location is excellent for exploring the Alfama district and indeed the rest of central Lisbon on foot.

Lovely neat apartment in a great location within the Alfama district (heart of the "fado" music in Lisbon) with its lovely little alleyways and cafe culture. Great views over the river and town and you can spot the cruise liners arriving. Bit of a steep walk up to the fourth floor so not for everyone. Could also do with some added comforts such as additional foam topper for the beds and additional kitchen products such as juicer and some coffee/tea as standard but everything was clean and in order on arrival. Would recommend to friends. Restaurants and City Sightseeing bus stops and train close by.

stayed with 2 children and husband on the fourth floor.perfect location .close to santa apolina station and supermarket. lovely pub/ reataurant beside us. great neighbourhood and friendly people.mauro was there to meet us on arrival and went through everything with us. lovely fella and so helpful.apartment very well laid out and had all mod cons. only set back was the stairs but we were out all day so only had one climb each day and it was well worth it for the fabulous view and location.

Nice Apartment for the Price
We were there for only 2 nights and wished we could have stayed a little longer. We had the 5th floor apartment which boasts an ocean view where cruise ships docked. The apartment itself is beautiful and clean inside and has a spacious kitchen complete with appliances including a clothes washer. The shower is a bit too small though where there's not a lot of room to move around. And we are not big people. Also, with no lifts those stairs are a bit hair raising for senior citizens like us, especially.

The apartment manager was extremely helpful on arrival and available for quick response to any issues we had. Beware of the stairs. very steep, again Mauro and his mate helped us to the apartment. We had to use ropes to lower our bags down the staircase when we left! Location was handy to the downtown area.Great outlook over the Port area.

Comfortable apartment right in the Alfama
These apartments are very comfortable and well-equipped, easy walk to supermarket and the wonders of the Alfama. Our apartment (4th floor walk-up) had great views of the river and neighborhood, but if you're not up to lugging luggage etc. up and down it may not be suitable for you. Driving around here is interesting- very hilly, narrow streets and parking is a challenge right near the apartment, although there is a public lot a few blocks away. We really enjoyed having an apartment instead of just a hotel room and being in the thick of things!
