As a modern town, Leioa doesn’t have an old quarter as such, but you’re sure to fall in love with the town as you enjoy a stroll around its streets. You’ll definitely want to visit the Elexalde neighbourhood, the nerve centre of the town where you'll find the town hall, dating from the 19th century, and the beautiful church of San Juan Bautista, built in 1526.
Other monuments that you're sure to love include the palace of Artaza, an architectural masterpiece surrounded by a quiet park where you can enjoy a relaxing walk, as well as the picturesque Errekalde mill. There’s no doubt, these sites are the perfect way to top off your package deal to Leioa.
If you’re searching for a more active type of holiday and enjoy walking, the Bilbao estuary is the place for you. Enjoy a pleasant stroll down the estuary and take in the good weather and breeze. If you walk for about two hours to the southeast, you’ll end up in Bilbao.
If you visit Leioa at the end of May, you’ll notice that the streets are even more lively than usual. This is because this is the time the locals celebrate Umore Azoka, a street artists' fair organised by the town council. On 24 June they also celebrate the feast of San Juan, or St. John, the patron saint of Leioa.
To get to Leioa, you’ll want to fly to Bilbao airport, just 10 miles away. Once there, you can take two buses or combine a bus with the Bilbao metro line.
