Boating, paddling and fishing are among the activities on a shimmering mountain lake, while its forest is excellent for hiking and cycling.

Sheltered in a valley between impressive mountains stands Lake Kachess, a glorious basin of water that springs from an opening in its namesake river. It is a serene recreational area, with nature trails meandering through its surrounding forest. Enjoy the utter tranquility in this magnificent setting.

Lay down a blanket on a grassy spot on the shore for a picnic with your family, with the lake serving as a picturesque view. Hike between the trees, ensuring you bring enough water and sunscreen for the walk. Go mountain biking around the lake’s perimeter or try swimming or fishing for rainbow trout and kokanee salmon.

Stay at one of the homes or the Kachess Campground on the edge of the lake. Make use of the campground’s amenities and sit by a fire, before sleeping beneath the stars.

Reach the northern tip of the water basin, which is known as Little Kachess Lake. In winter, go skiing down the slopes of the adjacent Summit at Snoqualmie. The resort has all types of dining and recreational options, as well as ski slopes running down four separate mountains. At the lake’s southern point, follow the Kachess River to Lake Easton State Park, which has a children’s play area.

Note that the lake is used as a storage reservoir for an irrigation project and its water levels are controlled by the Kachess Dam. The name of the site comes from a Native American dialect that means More Fish.

Lake Kachess runs between Cle Elum Lake and Keechelus Lake, a little west of central Washington. Rent a car in Seattle and drive east for 68 miles (110 kilometers) to arrive here in 60 to 90 minutes.

While you’re in the region, check out neighboring landmarks such as Mt. Rainer National Park, Washington State Horse Park and the Yakima River.
