If you have an interest in history, there are many worthwhile places to see during your weekend in Kristianstad. Walk around the ruins of the 10th century castle Aosehus, and marvel at the majestic Church of the Holy Trinity, built in the 15th century by Christian IV. Impressively, its beautiful baroque organ from 1630 is still in use today. Don't miss the Artillery Museum where you can see more modern military vehicles and artillery pieces and visit exhibitions and lectures about military history.
Kristianstad is also home to the Vattenriket, an eco museum and protected wetland within walking distance from the train station and city centre. Start your visit to the reserve at Naturum, where you can learn more about species that live here, such as eagles, storks and cranes. Book a guided boat tour or rent a canoe and travel along Helge River. The centrally located swimming pool Tivolibadet offers another type of water experience for young and old.
Kulturkvarteret Kristianstad is a melting pot of different cultural phenomena. Here you can attend concerts, theatre, stand up, literary meets, lectures and lots of other events. Cultural events are also held at Kristianstads Teater and in Kristianstad Arena, which also hosts sporting events like handball tournaments.
Half an hour west of Kristianstad you find the splendid Tykarps Cave, where you on a guided tour can descend twelve metres underground. After the tour around the massive cavities and tunnels, head back up for a coffee at the café or stay and enjoy a candle lit dinner down in the mine. Get to the caves by car, but around Kristianstad itself it is easy to get around by train or bus.
