Kotor Old Town Walls

Climb more than a thousand steps to reach the summit of these medieval town walls and look down on the red roofs and stunning bay.

The Kotor Old Town Walls form a set of ramparts that for many centuries protected the medieval municipality, alongside its towers, gates and forts. You are able to walk along the tops of the walls, which encircle and rise above the town. Embark on a scenic hike to the peaks of the ramparts for excellent views of Kotor and the Bay of Kotor.

Bring comfortable walking shoes for the ascent along these historic town walls. The walls are broken up by an array of bastions. Admire the imposing Kampana Tower at the northwestern end of the ramparts. The citadel dates back to the 13th century and offers some of the best views of the bay. Capture photos of the red-tiled roofs of the town’s historic center, with a backdrop of the sparkling blue bay and green mountains.

Reach the towering Sea Gate and encounter the River Gate and the Bembo Bastion, which were all constructed in the 1500s. See these structures and ramparts at night, when their lights mark a semi-loop around the bayside town. The reflected lights in the bay appear to complete the loop.

Make sure to bring enough water for your trip, particularly in the warm summer months. Be cautious as you climb, as the steps are fairly narrow and steep.

There is a fee to enter the ramparts, whose construction began in the 9th century. Over the years, they were restored and enlarged by the various people who occupied this region, including the Byzantines and Venetians. By the 1400s, they formed a full circle around the town.

The Kotor Old Town Walls are in the northern part of the historic center of the town. Take a ferry from other parts of Montenegro or a bus to the terminal in Kotor. See other sights in the central district, such as the Cats Museum, the Church of St. Luke and the Shopping Centre Kamelija.

Make sure you wear sensible shoes to walk around, especially if it rains, the floors can get pretty slippery
