This harbour town, first recorded in 1038, is situated in the west of Baden-Wuerttemberg, just on the border with France. In the pretty town centre of Kehl you will find a large pedestrian zone with countless shops. Treat yourself to a break from your shopping spree in some of the cosy cafés and restaurants or relax away from the hustle and bustle on the Rhine Promenade or in the rose gardens. A short trip to the idyllic districts of Kehl is also worth doing. The former fishing village of Auenheim, first recorded in the year 888, captivates visitors with its beautiful timbered houses and famous outdoor pool. In the district of Goldscheuer you will see the gold panning fountain which is a reminder of the gold panning tradition along the Rhine. The districts of Bodersweiher and Kork both have romantic timber framed houses and landmarked village centres that are worth seeing.
Cross the 387-metre-long Passerelle footbridge during your city trip to Kehl. The bridge, which connects the French and German banks of the Rhine, was opened in 2004 for the regional garden show. In the middle of the structure, which only pedestrians and cyclists are permitted to cross, there is a 100m² platform where you can have a seat. On both banks of the Rhine during your mini-break in Kehl you can find peace and relaxation by the old trees in the vast parks.
An experience for the whole family during your trip is the Rhine forest nature discovery trail. The 3km-long barrier-free path has fourteen exciting stops along the way where you can discover the world of the riverside forest.
Don’t miss out on the view from the 44-metre-high Weißtannenturm (Silver-fir Observation Tower) during your city trip to Kehl. From both of the tower’s observation decks, which were opened in 2003, you can see as far as the mountains in the Black Forest and Vosges.
Along the Old Rhine you will see unspoilt nature from a time when the river had not yet been straightened out. Today it is seen as a green oasis in the town. Take a leisurely stroll on the path through this idyllic riverside landscape. On the banks of the Old Rhine you will see a 75m² lake stage which is used for events during the Kehl Summer of Culture.
Visit Kehl outdoor pool on hot summer’s days. With 10-metre diving boards, two slides and pools for both swimmers and non-swimmers, it has plenty on offer for your entertainment. The large play park, badminton courts and beach volleyball courts will thrill both big and small visitors alike.
