The plains of Central Ostrobothnia host an annual summer celebration of folk music, but violins, jouhikko lyres, kanteles and accordions can be heard all year round in Kaustinen. The best known concert venues in Kaustinen include the Pelimannitalo folk music hall and the folk art centre, where the Kaustinen hall is blasted out of the rock. The same venue also hosts Finland's folk instrument museum, with an exhibition of the musical history of the River Perhonjoki valley featuring more than a thousand instruments ranging from simple whistles to folk music instruments from the last century. Get to know the violin folk music culture that started life as a wedding tradition and listen to the distinctive kantele music from the River Perhonjoki valley. When you have listened to your heart's content, it is time to admire the visual beauty of the folk art centre's architecture, both inside and out. The folk art centre also includes a cinema known as Kino Kansantaiteenkeskus.
The verdant nature in the River Perhonjoki valley is one of the other key experiences of a holiday in Kaustinen. Follow the hiking trail along the rugged Kaustinen rocks in the middle of the village or check out the rapids on River Perhonjoki. And how about a fishing trip or rowing on the river?
