Situated to the north of the hustle, bustle and vibrant nightlife of Patong, Kamala Beach is a closely guarded secret. The beach offers quiet and tranquillity, without the crowds that populate some of Phuket’s other beach destinations. Honeymooners are often drawn to its chilled out vibe and breathtaking sunsets.
Despite the quiet, Kamala Beach is still equipped with all of the amenities needed. Sun loungers and parasols are available to rent, stretching the entire length of the beach in high season – although there is still plenty of soft white sand available to throw down a towel. There are considerably less sun loungers in low season when even fewer tourists visit, but still plenty available for use.
The relaxed bars and restaurants that line the beachfront offer snacks and refreshing juices to be enjoyed on the beach, or for a sumptuous lunch, why not dine in and sample several courses of the delicious Thai and international fare on offer. Bob's Beach Bar is a favourite of the visitors and locals alike. Water sport equipment is on offer, including jet skis and parasailing. Those that want to explore the coast a little further can hire a longboat. Those wanting to stay put can indulge in a traditional Thai massage.
The water is calm and flat for most of the year, and although there is an occasional swell between May and October, it rarely attracts the hordes of surfers that populate other areas of Phuket’s coast. This means that swimming in the clear turquoise sea is safe all year round, making Kamala beach a popular choice with families.
Be sure to tear yourself away from the beach and explore the shops and stalls of Kamala Town. The town is just a few streets behind the beach, and hosts a market twice a week on the main road. Here you can enjoy delicious, fresh Thai food, barter with the locals for a bargain or simply soak up the atmosphere.
Kamala Beach is located eight kilometres to the north of Patong. Heading straight to Kamala from the airport will take around 30 minutes by car.
