This mountain ridge is an adventurer’s paradise, with miles of hiking trails and ski and snowboard runs set amid sub-alpine lakes, valleys and meadows.

The spectacular Hurricane Ridge mountain range is one of Olympic National Park’s most famous features. Hike the dramatic ridge-top trails during summer, hit the slopes for skiing and snowboarding in winter and enjoy the majestic mountain scenery year-round.

Hurricane Ridge was named for the strong winds that are a common occurrence at this high elevation. Check weather conditions before embarking on a trip here, since these rough winds and heavy snowfalls can make trails treacherous and impassable. Look closely and you may see snow even during summer.

Begin your excursion at the visitor center where you can get up-to-date information on suitable hiking routes and trail conditions. Spend some time looking over the fascinating exhibits which explain the varied habitats of the Olympic Mountains. Visitors can also watch a 20-minute orientation video, which is available on request. Stock up on snacks and use the on-site restroom facilities before leaving to explore the wilderness.

Join one of the guided walks, organized from the visitor center during summer. Or venture out alone on the Hurricane Hill Trail and enjoy the majestic mountain views at your own pace. This trail is relatively easy, measuring just over 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) return, and climbs about 700 feet (213 meters) to an elevation over 5,000 feet (1,500 meters).

In winter, put on appropriate cold-weather clothing and head out to experience the ridge in the cold, crisp air. Take a guided snowshoe walk to see the snowy panoramas of the Olympic Range. Or for more speed, rent or use your own gear to race down the ski and snowboard slopes. Families can take advantage of the family-oriented Ski and Snowboard Area, which offers 10 downhill runs.

Reach the area by the Hurricane Ridge Road, located near the main Olympic National Park Visitor Center. While the road is always open during summer, closures are common during winter. Park entrance fees are applied.
