Holbaek has an abundance of shops, eateries and cultural as well as historical attractions for all ages. No matter what you like, there is something to do here all year round. Do you prefer relaxation and pampering, or to enjoy the hygge of the city or an action experience? Holbaek has everything.
Holbaek was reportedly founded by Valdemar the Conqueror in the thirteenth century as a market and port town, and the original street layout is largely still intact to this day. Learn more about the history of Holbaek at the Holbaek Museum, as well as at the folksy open-air museum Andelslandsbyen Nyvang, where you and your family can learn about old ways of life and crafts.
Go skating on the Isrosen ice rink in the winter, followed by a tour of the local museums, or enjoy a boat trip on the Ise Fjord, a game of golf or a visit to one of the town's inspiring art galleries such as Aeglageret in the summer.
As in other Danish market towns, most shops in Holbaek are clustered around one big, busy market street. From here, there is only a few minutes’ walk to the water where you can take boat trips on the fjords, perhaps with a stop on the island of Oro. The latter is particularly popular with children and those young at heart, as the island offers an excellent zoo with animals from all around the world.
Make sure you don’t miss out on the beautiful scenery that surrounds the town whilst on city break in Holbaek. While the fjord sets the scene for kayaking, fishing as well as swimming, Tuse Naes, located just north of Holbaek, is a lush, hilly area where you can hike and bike on the beautiful path Fjordstien.
It's easy to take a weekend stay in Holbaek, as you can get trains from both Kalundborg and Copenhagen to Holbaek. There are also several buses in the town that can connect you to the main sights on a daily basis. If you arrive by car, you can follow the Holbaek Motorway directly from Copenhagen to Holbaek. Holbaek is located 45 miles west of Copenhagen Airport. There are frequent regional trains connecting Copenhagen and Holbaek. Note that you may find Copenhagen written in Danish as Kobenhavn in Danish timetables.
You should certainly have a holiday in Holbaek if you are looking for a city with great sightseeing, fun outdoor activities, interesting art and lots of shopping, all in one place.
