A highlight of the Perth coastline, Hillarys Boat Harbour is a hugely popular entertainment spot where visitors and locals alike head to laze on the beach, take the youngsters to the playground, go shopping, and eat out in its local restaurants. Named after pioneer resident Bertram John Hillary who built his boat shed here back in the 1930s, the area has is now one of the city’s foremost attractions.
Many people come here for a gentle stroll looking out over the Indian Ocean and the yachts and sailing boats bobbing along the skyline. From here you can head out on a whale-watching trip between September and December, go on a deep-sea fishing boat, book a guided scuba dive to explore the coral, or even go on a ride on a Harley-Davidson. There is so much on offer here.
For a gentler experience of the marina, take a relaxed dip in the water or stretch out under the palm trees on the beautiful beach. Nearby, there’s a wide range of boutiques on selling everything from gourmet chocolates to impressive local artworks, jewellery and designer clothes.
If you want to bring the kids, take them to the Great Escape amusement park where they can enjoy the water slides and the giant trampolines, as well as try out the climbing wall and the high-ropes course. The whole family can enjoy the mini golf together. At the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre, you’ll learn all about the region’s aquatic life.
If you’re looking for a bite to eat, all along Sorrento Quay you’ll find plenty of places from gourmet seafood to good old burgers and steaks. If you don’t want a full meal, you can simply enjoy a coffee or an ice cream while admiring the dazzling ocean view.
Nestled in the charming northern suburb of Hillarys, the marina is about 22 kilometres from the centre of Perth. There is free parking available if you plan to come by car, but public transport services between here and both Perth and Fremantle run all day.
