Find out why this stately Italian Renaissance Revival-style mansion has earned the nickname Palace of the South.

Hay House is among Georgia’s most celebrated historical buildings. Built in the mid 19th-century, the mansion features a number of imaginative technological amenities. Its Italian Renaissance Revival architecture marked a noticeable departure from the more modest Greek Revival style that defined this time period. Take a tour of this impressive mansion to learn about its fascinating history and the significance of its design, as well as view its ornate décor.

This stunning mansion was commissioned by businessman William Butler Johnston. Built between 1855 and 1860, this elaborate home’s infrastructure was remarkably modern for its time. It featured hot and cold running water, as well as central heating and an intercom system. Notice the two-story octagonal cupola on top of the mansion, which acts as part of its innovative ventilation system by helping to draw hot air out of the house.

Before going inside, admire Hay House’s stately exterior, which is characteristic of the Italian Renaissance Revival style. Its perfectly symmetrical brick structure is accented with white trim and columns.

Explore many of the mansion’s 24 principal rooms during a guided tour. See the ground level of the mansion, where the family lived during the summer to escape the heat. Pay the extra fee for a Behind the Scenes Tour, which covers all seven levels of the Hay House.

On the second floor, walk through two elegant bedrooms and see picturesque views from the terrace overlooking the front lawn. Note the lovely stained-glass windows, beautiful period furniture and trompe l'oeilwall paintings found throughout the house.

End your visit with a stop in the museum store, which is located on the ground floor. Get a gift that reflects Macon’s antebellum heritage or a unique piece created by a local artist.

Find Hay House atop Coleman Hill, in the heart of Macon. Hay House is open daily with closures on major holidays. Pay the admission fee at the front desk. Parking is available behind the house and in the street in front of it.

Don’t miss the chance to visit Macon’s most distinguished historic landmark.
