Gros Piton is located south of Soufrière, on St. Lucia Island. The striking cone-shaped mountain is linked by an inland ridge to a smaller elevation called the Petit Piton. Together the two peaks are known as the Twin Pitons and are a UNESCO site due to their outstanding nature. Go see these towering volcanoes and discover one of the most beautiful natural landmarks of the Caribbean.
The renowned Gros Piton is 2,619 feet (798 meters) high and is very popular with hikers and climbers. Take the Gros Piton nature trail to discover lush vegetation, wildlife and spectacular views. The first half of the track is an easy to moderate hike, winding around the mountain in a gradual slope. Enjoy the sight of the ocean and explore tunnels, caves and rock shelters. If you are a more experienced hiker go for the second half of the trail. It’s more difficult and has a steeper ascent. The whole Gros Piton nature trail will take you about 4 hours and it’s recommended to travel with a local guide.
More than half of the sea surrounding Gros Piton is full of colorful coral reefs. Back on land, the vegetation and wildlife are also abundant. Admire the tropical forest and discover some of the 148 types of plants that have been recorded in the mountain. Try to spot some of the 27 different bird species, five of which are unique to the area. The volcanic peak is also home to other animals, such as bats, reptiles, opossums, rodents and amphibians.
Finish the trip with a visit to the beautiful Piton Waterfalls. The water flowing through does not actually come from the Pitons, but they get their name because they are in the same area as the volcanic peaks. Enjoy the almost 30-foot (9-meter) high waterfall and swim in the refreshing waters of this delightful natural pool.
The Gros Piton and its twin sister are visible from almost every part of Soufrière and St. Lucia. They are the perfect backdrop on an island of stunning natural beauty.
