Located on a long, spacious esplanade, the iconic landmark offers opportunities for photos of the impressive fountain and sculptures beneath the stone tower. Walk along the river banks to reach the monument before exploring other nearby attractions.
The very politically active group, the Girondins, played a crucial part in the early progress of the French Revolution they played a central part in founding the legislative assembly. However, as power was ceded to the violent Jacobins, the constitutional changes of the Revolution led to the Reign of Terror, during which the more moderate Girondins faced execution along with thousands of others.
Look upward at the pillar, which is about 140 feet (43 meters) tall. At its top is a statue of an angel of liberty holding a broken chain. The base of the column features a statue of women representing Bordeaux, the Garonne River and the Dordogne region.
Admire the detail of the bronze fountains flanking the monument. One of the fountains is known as the Triumph of the Republic and depicts a woman holding an olive branch, a symbol of peace. Try to guess the meaning of each figure in the fountains one celebrates family and another brotherhood.
