Gautefall has long been a magnet for skiers from the counties of Telemark and Agder and there are many great nature experiences for all ages in the surrounding areas.
From the beginning of the last century, tourists have come to Gautefall, keen to experience the great outdoors, the fresh air and the fantastic views over the Gautefall mountains. The first hotel was built in 1973, and the Ski Centre opened three years later. It is now a popular destination, especially for skiers. The resort has several lifts, 14 slopes, a number of ski trails, toboggan runs and snowboarding facilities. It also boasts an outstanding biathlon centre that is open all year round. Imagine a weekend in Gautefall where you spend all day on the sunny slopes, stopping only for lunch at one of the restaurants, then après-ski in the evening, before returning to the warmth and cosiness of your accommodation. You can relax in the snow regardless of age or experience.
A trip to Gautefall provides many opportunities to experience the culture, history and outdoor activities on offer. The city is located midway between Treungen and Prestestranda, the two closest villages. If you choose to drive to Treungen, don't forget to stop at Jettegrytene i Nissedal – an all-natural water park nature, and fun for the whole family. Treungen itself is also popular during the summer months with the annual rock music festival, Treungen Festival.
In the other direction is Prestestranda, where you can visit Drangedal bygdetun, an open-air museum featuring old farm buildings from the region. It is also home to the Drangedal Church, which was built around 1775. The town also sits above Lake Toke, which is well-known among local and visiting anglers for having plenty of perch, trout, whitefish and arctic char. The water is also perfect for boating trips.
There are also many eateries and restaurants in Gautefall and Prestestranda. In the evening, you'll find entertainment in Tokestua, which also has a cinema. It is easy to get to Gautefall by car, with buses and trains also going from Drangedal. The closest major airport is Oslo Airport, Gardermoen.
