The rolling dunes behind the beach form part of a beautiful nature reserve called The Burrows. Explore the family trail when you visit and discover plenty of wildlife thriving in this seaside environment. Look out for bonded snails, adders, slow-worms and common lizards and listen out for the sounds of grasshoppers. If you take a walk through the reserve at night during June and July you may even see some glow-worms.
The Pembrokshire Coast Path National Trail also runs through Freshwater East Beach. From the beach you can walk east to remote Swanlake Bay. The shingle beach there is only accessible by walking the coastal path so you have to be determined to get down to it. As the tide goes out it reveals golden sands sheltered by cliffs on one side and craggy rock pools for children to explore on the other.
There is no café at Freshwater East Beach although an ice cream van operates there most days, offering drinks and snacks, but you can walk west to Stackpole Quay, a small harbour used by fishermen and small pleasure craft, where you will find a small café.
