Florø has always been an important fishing centre, dating back to the herring fishing days in the 1800s, and fishing continues to be the main industry. The municipality has been voted the nicest in Norway several times, and was structurally built as a city, unlike other towns that have simply overgrown.
Take a trip to the Kvanhovden lighthouse on the coast – you can even stay here overnight if you wish. Or visit Kystmuseet and learn about the lives of fishermen and farmers through the years. The rock carvings in Ausevika date back to the Stone Age and are worth a visit. Take a trip to the Norsk Hjortesenter and learn more about the development of deer as a resource.
Popular Strandgata, which runs parallel to the coastline, is Florø’s large shopping street and is full of different shops. There are many excellent hikes around Florø, with Brandsøyåsen being one of the most popular. The 1000-foot summit offers view across the city and surrounding archipelago. Florø is a coastal town and even though it is incredibly beautiful, the weather is often inclement, so remember to bring appropriate clothes.
Getting to Florø is easiest by car, as you are free to drive around the area and visit places that lie outside the main town. You can also fly in to Florø Airport, which is no more than five minutes from the centre, on domestic flights from destinations including the international airports in Oslo and Bergen. Hurtigruten boats stop in Florø, and there are several ferries that call at the port.
