Delve into wild eucalyptus gullies or walk high on a boardwalk to see breathtaking views of a waterfall plummeting over a sheer escarpment into the Kangaroo River.

See the mesmerising Fitzroy Falls nearby a town of the same name in Morton National Park, one of the Southern Highlands’ most cherished wild landscapes. Discover the waterfall boardwalk trail and dizzying lookout point or walk through dense eucalypt forests and along the picturesque escarpment to enjoy unbeatable views of the falls. Listen for the deceptive call of the lyrebird and the chattering of colourful parrots.

Admire the striking beauty of Fitzroy Falls. Stroll along the easy 200-metre (650-foot) boardwalk that runs alongside Yarrunga Creek and winds around fragrant native bushland to a breathtaking lookout. Gaze upon the majestic waterfall plunging 81 metres (266 feet) down the sheer cliff face into a lush gully and snap photographs of the mountainous vista extending behind the escarpment.

Alternatively, go bushwalking along a 1.6-kilometre (1-mile) circuit following the escarpment and revealing a stunning lookout of the plummeting cascade. The trails are well maintained, with plenty of resting spots and signposts identifying the surrounding flora and fauna. Look for the elusive lyrebird running through the bush or flocks of rosellas flying through the treetops.

Have a drink at the Falls Café or head to the Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre to learn about the history and ecology of this serene spot and pick up souvenirs and craft items.

The small village of Fitzroy Falls has an antique store, café and art and craft galleries. Combine your trip to Fitzroy Falls with a visit to Belmore Falls, the Glow Worm Glen and other natural wonders in Morton National Park. Visit the local berry farm to pick your own berries and sample delicious farm-fresh produce.

Fitzroy Falls is located southwest of Wollongong and about 140 kilometres (90 miles) from Sydney. The town has self-contained cabins and cottage-style lodgings. Pay the small fee for vehicle entry to Morton National Park. Check out Fitzroy Falls during your road trip across the Southern Highlands to Kangaroo Valley and the South Coast.
