Explosion! Museum of Naval Firepower tells the story of the history of naval warfare in a unique and engaging style. See the museum’s fantastic collection of weapons and interactive exhibits located in a former gunpowder and munitions depot dating back over two centuries.
Beginning in the 18th century with gunpowder and continuing all the way to the present day with its modern inventions, the collection here is extensive. View small arms, missiles, torpedoes and even a nuclear bomb.
The weapons displayed have been known to conquer all the oceans depths, including surface and sub-surface missiles as well as underwater mines. Listen to personal stories of those who handled the weapons, including the thousands of female munitions workers who played a vital part in the war.
See a real-life gun turret and test your aim with a video game target or dodge mines in an underwater seabed. Interactive activities mean that the whole family will be entertained. There are even themed dress-ups for children.
After a detailed and enjoyable history lesson, sit at the waterside Camber Lights Café for tea or a more substantial snack. From here, look out across the camber dock, the site of Portsmouth’s early commercial trading docks, and watch the harbor in action.
The museum is open daily except from November to March when it is open only on weekends. To reach the museum, start at Portsmouth Harbor and catch the waterbus across to Gosport. Use the free parking if you drive. Tickets are available at the entrance. Ask for the discount for families.
With the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard’s All Attraction ticket, entry is free. The ticket is fantastic value and allows you to visit many other nearby attractions including the HMS Warrior 1860, a historic Victorian ship and museum which was the first ship of its kind to be built in Britain. Admire the detailed rope work as you make your way through this beautifully refurbished ship.
History and education are mixed with considerable entertainment in the fascinating Explosion! Museum of Naval Firepower.
