Enschede was a small village until the first half of the 19th century and now counts 160,000 inhabitants. The city doesn't have a lot of old buildings but the numerous cultural activities more than make up for it.
Start your day in Enschede with a walk around town. Take in the unique architecture, go shopping around Van Heekplein and take a seat at a sidewalk café on Oude Markt. Be sure not to miss the market on Van Heekplein on Saturdays.
If you're interested in the region’s history, don't miss the impressive Rijksmuseum Twenthe where you can admire works by Breughel and Monet among others. Another must is the TwentseWelle, a museum that focuses on the arrival and development of people in this region.
End the day with a performance. Book tickets for the Wilminktheater en Muziekcentrum Enschede, or Jazzpodium de Tor one of the oldest jazz clubs in the Netherlands.
There's also a lot to do around Enschede. You can always pop over to Germany and spend a day in Münster which is just an hour’s drive from Enschede. If you prefer to stay closer to town, you can hire bicycles for a day out in nature.
Enschede is easy to reach by car or train from anywhere in the Netherlands. If you're travelling around the Netherlands by car the city has several 24-hour parking garages where you can park your car long term.
