Take a daytrip north of Samana to these waterfalls where you can swim, learn from friendly locals and ride on horseback through the mountainous landscape.

The forest and waterfalls of El Limon provide photo opportunities for the adventurous traveller. Traverse the path up the mountain on horseback or on foot, enjoy a meal at the isolated El Limon restaurant and see the best of the Dominican Republic’s native jungle.

Choose one of two modes of transport to get to the waterfalls. Sign up for a horse ride, which is the most time efficient way to get through the forest. Let the horse guide the way while you enjoy the scenery and spot native plants such as the cigua blanca or the royal palm. Expect a fee for this trip, as you will require a guide. Guides will carry your bags, take pictures for you and those who speak English may provide information on the landscape. Be sure to leave a generous tip.

Adventurous travellers can strap on some good hiking boots and trek to the waterfalls. The walk can be muddy and steep in places. The challenging hike only makes the view and cold beer at the top of the waterfalls more rewarding.

Stop at the viewing platform at El Limon station. Have your camera ready to capture the sight of the Arroyo Chico river flowing down the mossy rock face. Bring your swimsuit to cool off in the pool below the waterfall.

Enjoy a meal at El Limon station or buy snacks, cigars and souvenirs from local vendors who gather around the waterfall.

Allow half a day to explore the El Limon Waterfall from Samana. Organise horse tours and guides from travel agents or at your hotel. Tours provide transportation to the horse ranch where the waterfall trail begins. Transporters charge fees and are likely to ask for a tip. Persistent locals offering horses and guides may hassle travellers venturing without a tour group just say a firm “no” and they’ll leave you alone.
