One of the hippest new destinations in Dusseldorf is the old harbour, resplendently reborn as a fashionable waterside playground. The derelict warehouses have been transformed into chic, new offices for the media and creative industries, award-winning restaurants and achingly cool bars, while stunning new buildings have sprung up on the abandoned docks.
Medienhafen (or Media Harbour), as it is also known, is a paradise for lovers of Postmodernism. One of the most iconic new additions to the skyline is Frank Gehry’s Der Neue Zollhof, an asymmetric fantasy of leaning towers and contrasting materials. Many of the world’s top design practices have contributed to the high-profile redevelopment of the waterfront, including the celebrated English architect David Chipperfield.
For a truly breathtaking overview of the harbour and the mighty river that is still one of Germany’s most important transport arteries, take a ride to the observation deck at the top of the Rhine Tower, which features the world’s largest decimal clock depicted as a light sculpture on its shaft, as well as a revolving restaurant. The observation deck is open from early morning until late at night, when the views of the city lights are particularly impressive.
The revamped harbour offers a wide choice of dining options, from elegant Michelin-starred restaurants to cosy bistros. Wander along Kaistrasse to see what’s on offer, perhaps dropping in to try the famous curry sausage at Berens am Kai, washed down with a bottle of local brewed beer. If you can’t make up your mind where to eat, consider joining a Gastro-Rally tour, which will introduce you to a selection of restaurants to help you find your favourite.
Dusseldorf-Hafen is a 10-minute drive or a 30-minute walk from the old town, at the southern end of the Rhine Promenade. There are metro and tram stops as well as pay parking nearby. For unrivalled views of the new landmarks from the river, book a boat tour full details can be found on the Medienhafen website.
