Ride on a narrow gauge railway, check out the artistic pottery, marvel at the tunnels and bridges and take in the panoramic views of this Coromandel attraction.

Take a journey on the Driving Creek Railway to zig-zag up a hill through the bushland on the Coromandel Peninsula in a fun and original way. This narrow gauge railway was originally built to supply wood and clay to the adjoining potteries, but it now mainly serves to take tourists on scenic rides.

Get your ticket and jump on board the small train. The return trip takes about an hour and shows many interesting features along the way. The ride encompasses two spirals, three short tunnels, five reversing points and several small bridges, so you won’t be bored for a minute. Check out the interesting sculptures and pottery features that line the track, a nice reminder of the railway’s origins.

Wander out onto the viewing deck of the hexagonal Eyefull Tower at the top of the railway. Enjoy the views out across the Hauraki Gulf and of the islands dotted among the sparkling seas. The bushland that surrounds the railway is slowly being regenerated as exotic plants are removed and natives, such as the kauri tree, are replanted. This vegetation carpets the hillsides in green lushness adding to the sweeping views.

Listen to the train driver’s commentary about how the railway and potteries were built. Imagine the work that went into building the railway during the 25 years over which it was constructed. Hear how potter Barry Brickell has been the driving force behind it all since 1975.

Make sure to have a look at the pottery on display once you arrive back at the starting point. You can purchase pottery, books and souvenirs of your visit in the shop. Take a walk around the small wildlife sanctuary area to complete your visit to this unusual yet amazing place.

The Driving Creek Railway is situated just under 2 miles (3 kilometers) outside of the town of Coromandel on the Coromandel Peninsula. This hilly attraction is best reached by car, but energetic walkers can get there on foot. The railway is open 7 days a week. Trains run at scheduled times, so booking ahead to secure a seat is recommended. Prices are per seat and family discounts are available.
