If you choose to spend your holidays in Daimiel, you’ll discover a historic town whose origins date back more than 4,000 years. Proof of this is the archaeological site of Motilla del Azuer, where the oldest well in the Peninsula can be found. This excavation has revealed a number of motillas, fortified settlements from the Bronze Age that are in very good condition.
In the Daimiel county museum, housed in a typical worker’s cottage, you can go on a journey that looks at prehistoric civilisations who inhabited the area and medieval buildings right through to the inventions of the Muslim world. The oldest religious building in Daimiel is the Parish Church of Santa Maria La Mayor, a Gothic church from the 14th century. Inside is the grave of Joaquín Ibáñez Cuevas, hero from the Spanish War of Independence. Be sure to take in the capitols, thought to represent symbols related to the Knights Templar. The town is also home to a unique type of wetland ecosystem in Spain: the Tablas de Daimiel National Park.
