Cheap flights to Venice
Venice is, perhaps, the archetypal fairy tale city.
This city of marble palaces built on a lagoon has beguiled visitors for centuries. Along the banks of the Grand Canal the finest Venetian architecture parades and preens, but it’s the Palazzo Ducale and Basilica di San Marco that dominate the popular imagination.
Yet, take a little more time here exploring the narrow backstreets and you’ll discover a treasure trove of neighbourhood churches built from priceless marbles, beautiful frescoes and basilicas displaying masterpieces of art.
And all of these cultural riches can be reached with the cheapest of flights.
Let’s show you how.
When to book cheap flights to Venice
We all want to be in Venice for the Carnival – but you’ll need to book your flight early and pay a high price for the fare if you want to join the fray. August’s Venice International Film Festival will also inflate prices.
As a general rule of thumb flight prices rise between April and October. This means that the cheapest flights, with the best weather, can be found in early spring.
The cheapest month for flights is November, but booking here does run the risk of rain marring many of the city’s fine views.
How to find the best flight deals to Venice from the UK
Whenever you are looking to visit Venice it’s usually possible to secure a lower air fare with just a few tricks up your sleeve.
Here’s how to find those cheap flights to Venice.
- Be flexible about your dates. If you are not restricted to flying on a certain day you can choose to ‘Show Flexible Dates’. This feature can be found right above where your flight options are returned. Use it to see a range of dates and the lowest priced flight for each.
- Be flexible about where you fly in to. Venice has two airports - Venice Marco Polo and Treviso – so you may want to compare flight prices to either. If you are hiring a car your options widen even further with airports at Trieste (60 miles), Verona (70 miles) and Bologna (80 miles) in reasonable driving distance.

Main airports in Venice
Two airports serve Venice. Venice Marco Polo is the main airport, located around four miles north of the city, perched on the edge of the lagoon. Venice’s second airport is Treviso. It’s situated 26 miles from the action and is favoured by the budget airlines.
For those landing at Marco Polo you can choose between arriving by road, rail or water. Buses or taxis can either take you all the way or drop you at Venezia Mestre railway station for a train journey you’ll never forget. Your train to Venezia Santa Lucia takes you on a narrow causeway over the lagoon, with breathtaking views surrounding you.
If you want to arrive in Venice like a movie star you can splash out on a water taxi from the airport. If the €100 price tag for the glamour is too much there’s always the public water ferry departing from the airport every 15 minutes.
From Treviso your choices are rather more humdrum. There’s the waiting taxis to take you the 26 miles or there’s a bus and train ride to Venezia Santa Lucia. You’ll need bus ACTT Line 6 to Treviso train station and from here a train to Santa Lucia.
How to get to and around in Venice
In the city built on water it is actually best to explore on foot. Pack some comfy footwear, though, for all those cobbled streets.
Of course, you’ll need to take to the water at some time. You can easily hop between the islands by vaporetto, or public water bus. And of course, private water taxi drivers and gondoliers will always be on hand should you need them.
Things not to miss in Venice
Once you’ve ticked off all the major sights and experiences here are three things to make sure you don’t miss.
- Losing yourself in the winding backstreets of Venice is a real pleasure. Just start walking and unexpected sights will appear – and you’ll find yourself well away from the crowds.
- The Campanile is the city’s tallest building, at nearly 100 metres high. Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III rode a horse to the top of the tower in 1451. Today you can take the lift to enjoy the superb views over Venice with the Dolomites just visible in the distance.
- Venetian cuisine is unique. Don’t miss out on the chance to try oca in onto (goose in its own fat) or freshwater lagoon fish done in saor.
