Visit Wrocław’s only UNESCO site and discover the interesting story of its construction and modernist architecture through an exhibit with interactive displays.

Centennial Hall (Hala Stulecia), also known as the People’s Hall, is an imposing 6,000-seat auditorium. Built in the early 20th century, the hall was one of the world’s first reinforced concrete buildings. Browse an exhibit dedicated to the hall’s construction and see the impressive music and light shows that take place at the neighboring fountain.

The hall was designed by German architect Max Berg in 1913 to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Napoleon’s defeat in 1813. The use of concrete and steel in such a large building was considered to be an innovative and bold architectural choice at the time. Note the massive dome on top of the hall. At 213 feet (65 meters) in diameter, it was the largest dome in the world when the building was first constructed.

Look for the 315-foot (96-meter) high steel spire set just in front of the building. It was added when the hall hosted the Recovered Territories Exhibition in 1948, a communist propaganda event aimed at celebrating Poland’s takeover of new territories.

Don’t miss the Discovery Centre found inside the hall. This permanent exhibit examines the history of the hall’s construction using touch-screen displays. Check out the other displays, which explore topics ranging from other Polish UNESCO sites to the architecture of famous skyscrapers.

The hall also hosts a variety of other events and temporary exhibits, including concerts and sporting events, throughout the year. Try to be at the hall when one of the light and sound shows are being held. These shows highlight the building’s unique architecture using video-mapping technology.

Outside the hall, follow the semicircular colonnade leading to Wroclaw Fountain. The fountain projects water up to 131 feet (40 meters) high using 300 sets of nozzles. The water theatrics are combined with music, fireworks, lasers and lights to create a spectacular show. Shows are held throughout the spring and summer. Check out the fountain in the winter when it’s transformed into an ice rink.

Centennial Hall is located in Szczytnicki Park and there is an admission fee. Walk or take the tram from Wroclaw’s city center to reach the hall.
