This elegant, centuries-old church is one of Valladolid’s most recognizable landmarks. It embodies the regal colonial charm that gives this town its character.

The Cathedral of San Gervasio, sometimes also known as the Church of San Servacio, is one of Valladolid’s most instantly recognizable buildings. See it from a distance and its high twin towers are still unmistakable. It is perfectly located for orienting yourself on a walking tour of this lovely city. Start your explorations of Valladolid here and find many of the town’s greatest attractions within easy reach.

A church was originally built in this spot in 1545. Come here today, however, and see a building that dates from a little later on. The current church was erected at the very start of the 18th century, with the older one having been destroyed after it was the site of political unrest. Try to see if you can spot ancient Mayan stones when you visit. Some of these relics of pre-Spanish civilization are thought to be incorporated into the church.

Stand outside the building, look up and see the two imposing towers that contain massive bells. The church’s huge clock is also very beautiful. The exterior of the building is less ornate than that of some other churches built around the same time, but it possesses an understated loveliness that makes the building stand out.

Step inside the building and see the wonderful domed roof from the inside. Take some time to look at the altar, one of the most elaborate features of the church. Another interesting item to look out for is the colorful, life-sized Christ statue, which lies within a glass casket.

The Cathedral of San Gervasio stands on the Main Plaza of Valladolid. This gorgeous square is the heart of the city and the cathedral is just one of the many handsome buildings surrounding it. After leaving the cathedral, spend some time sitting on one of the ornate white benches in the square and listening to the water flowing in the lovely fountain in the center. Take in some local history at the Museum San Roque or some art at the quirky and captivating Casa de los Venados. Both of these fascinating attractions are located just minutes away by foot.
