The Castillo de la Mota (Mota Castle) is one of the most famous constructions in San Sebastián in northern Spain. This castle in San Sebastián was built atop the mountain to defend the settlement from foreign attacks. The city was located at the base of Monte Urgull because it was considered a safe location. The tall hill protected it from the force of the sea and the strong winds coming from the north. The top of the mountain was the perfect site to build a fortress. At the beginning of the 12th century, King Sancho VII from Navarre ordered the construction of a protective wall around the village and a castle that would serve as a fort. During the 16th century, the Castillo de la Mota went under several renovations for varied reasons. In 1575, for example, lightning struck the castle, causing a devastating fire. While you are visiting the castle, make sure you see the Monumento al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Monument to Jesus Sacred Heart), also known as Cristo de la Mota (Mota Christ).
