Located in the centre of one of the world’s most affluent and commerce-driven cities, Capital Gardens is a welcome sanctuary. Known locally as Asima Gardens, this patch of green may be small but it makes a big impression among the towering skyscrapers that surround it. Whether you pack a picnic lunch or just want to take some time to relax, this is the perfect destination.
Abu Dhabi has a reputation as a thoroughly modern city. When the wide boulevards and tall buildings were being planned, the city designers were also careful to include plenty of urban parks throughout the city. Today, the Capital Gardens are one of 20 such oases that can be found throughout Abu Dhabi. It blends the city’s Middle Eastern culture with a modern approach to landscape and garden design.
Typical of a city that is known for its magnificent skyscrapers, the gardens are surrounded on all sides by massive office buildings. However, the inside of the park is completely peaceful. At its centre, you’ll find a large pond that periodically spouts brilliant water displays from its fountains.
The gardens are broken up into several mini gardens that give it the impression of being much larger than it actually is. Enjoy the colourful flowers and lush trees. Watch the usually businesslike locals relaxing with family and friends. Be sure to bring the children, as each garden cove is outfitted with swings, slides, benches and climbing frames.
This is a popular destination for workers on their lunch break, children’s parties and shoppers taking a break from the nearby mega-malls. The gardens are open 24 hours a day and has an indoor refreshment facility that has vending machines and tables.
Capital Gardens are located in the trendy Al Markaziyah district, the downtown and central business zone of the city. It is directly opposite the National Bank of Abu Dhabi.
