Byron Bay
Duck into a quirky store to pick up some hippy gear, hike through national parks, or grab a board and get surfing at one of Australia’s favourite beach towns.

Byron Bay is where people go to get away from the hustle and bustle of the real world. What started out as a timber and dairy settlement has evolved into a town of hippies, surfers, musicians and artists. Enjoy some of Australia’s favourite beaches, lots of groovy bars and cafés, and national parks only a short distance from town.

Wander the streets and enjoy the combination of hippie and surf culture. You’ll see stores selling everything from surfboards to tie-dyed clothes. Take a yoga class, shop for herbal medicines and enjoy great locally grown coffee, excellent chai and tasty homemade food.

Byron Bay is renowned for some of the best breakers in the country, so surfers are in for a treat. Head to the Pass, Wategos Beach or the quieter Tallow Beach to join long-boarders waiting for that perfect wave. If it's busy, sitting on your board "out the back" is as much fun as the surfing itself. Strike up a conversation with a local and enjoy bobbing around on the crystal-clear water. Those who’ve never jumped on a board but want to give it a try can take lessons with local instructors.

For anyone just out for a quick dip in the waves, Main Beach has smaller surf and plenty of room for sunbathing.

Take the coastal trail up nearby Cape Byron to the lighthouse. You’ll get great views of the town and bay, and are likely to spot dolphins, stingrays and, occasionally, whales in the water. Head inland to the nearby nature reserves and national parks to see some of the local flora and fauna. Arakwal National Park is great for bird or lizard watching and borders a near-untouched beach.

Don't miss lunch or an afternoon at the Beach Hotel. This sprawling pub-on-a-hill overlooks the beach and is a local institution. Check out the local papers for the live music guide. Byron is a popular stop off for touring bands, and plenty of big acts pass through the town.
