Nestled in the verdant Puster Valley, Brunico, or Bruneck in German, is a historic town infused with rich Italian and Austrian culture. Although dramatic mountain ranges surround the valley, Bruneck itself is on a hilltop, offering wonderful views of the lush landscape that draws so many visitors to this area. Come here to enjoy natural beauty combined with fascinating history. Divide your time between exploring gorgeous walking trails and touring historical buildings.
Brunico is an ancient settlement. Relics found here date back to the Roman Empire and even the Stone Age. Come today to see how carefully many of the town’s most beautiful medieval buildings have been cared for over the centuries.
Start at the Rathausplatz, the square in the heart of the town’s historic center. Although the Rathaus, or town hall, is a modern building, the wide-open square is an excellent place to start the day with an outdoor coffee before moving on to see historic and cultural sights.
The first stop for many after breakfast is the striking Brunico Castle. Perched high on a hilltop, this dramatic building looks like it could be home to Dracula. Step inside, however, and see that there are no vampires in sight. Instead, the building houses the fascinating RIPA museum of mountain heritage.
For another great museum experience, rent a bike and cycle along the lovely route to the nearby village of Teodone to visit the wonderful South Tyrolean Folklore Museum. Tour other medieval towns in the area, including Riscone and Stegona.
Continue exploring the scenic trails that lead through the Puster and Aurina valleys by bike or on foot. Alternatively, head out to discover the beauty of the nearby Kronplatz mountain.
Drive to Brunico or relax on one of the trains that follow scenic routes through the postcard-perfect countryside of the Puster Valley. Arrive in summer to see the wildflowers in bloom or in winter to enjoy pristine alpine landscapes blanketed in snow.
