Located less than 2 hours south of Paris, Bourges is best known as the location of one of France’s most beautiful cathedrals. Spend a day exploring the streets around the centre and discover charming cafés, unique shopping and other architectural delights.
Head to the breathtaking Cathédrale St-Etienne. This dates back to the 12th century and is considered by many as one of Europe’s finest cathedrals. Walk around the exterior and study the towering spires and giant buttresses inspired by the Notre Dame in Paris. Inside, view the stunning selection of stained-glass windows, created between 1215 and 1225. Stories such as the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan are told in bright colour, with sublime attention to detail. Climb to the top of the Tour de Beurre for views over the old town.
Enjoy more fantastic architecture at the nearby Palais de Jacques Coeur. The former home of the richest man in France is a showy 15th-century mansion featuring imposing turrets and a beautiful arched main entrance. Guided tours can be organised locally if you wish to look inside.
Explore the cobbled streets of the old town to discover more traditional French houses. Make your way to Rue Bourbonnoux and Rue Coursalon to see marvellous examples of classic half-timber and light stone buildings.
Take a short walk north of the cathedral to the Marais. A huge area of allotment gardens is divided by a system of canals used by the locals to access their patches. A stroll around the tranquil gardens takes several hours and offers excellent views of the cathedral.
A number of Irish pubs in the Bourges town centre offer a fun environment to relax after a day on your feet. Enjoy French and European cuisine at restaurants in the new town. Stay at one of the hotels conveniently located just a short walk from the cathedral.
