Shakespeare’s Birthplace is a half-timbered structure which dates back to the 16th century, when the most famous playwright in the history of the world was born, and where his descendants continued to live until the middle of the 19th. It has been converted into a fascinating museum dedicated to the unrivalled writer who spent his early years here, and is located in Stratford-upon-Avon, a small town 48 kilometres from Birmingham.
Examine the wonderful displays in the Life, Love and Legacy exhibit, which traces Shakespeare’s development from his first days to his time working in The Globe in London. Vivid and stimulating presentations examine the genius of his writing. Examine the First Folio on display, dating from 1623 – this is the first collection of all 36 of Shakespeare’s plays in one volume, and is extremely rare and valuable in the present day.
An even rarer piece is the famous “Cobbe Portrait”, which is said to be the only surviving portrait taken from real life. This is held in the Treasures exhibition. Some of the other highlights on show here include a letter from the writer’s close confidant, Richard Quincey, dating from 1598, and a gold ring with the initials “WS” embossed on it.
After looking at the Glover’s Workshop, continue out to the gardens, where you will be regaled by the performances of the Shakespeare Aloud! troupe. This high-quality group performs pieces from the playwright’s magnificent repertoire on a daily basis. There are also regular talks given in the café.
Shakespeare’s Birthplace is in the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon, which is a 45-minute drive from the city centre. Trains are also available to the town from Birmingham. The museum is open every day of the year, excepting some public holidays. Comprehensive details on opening hours, the times of performances and talks, and everything else you might need to know are on the website.
