Browse a private collection of Maya artifacts, such as jewelry and pottery, amassed by a local man during his travels throughout Guatemala.

The Azul Maya Archaeological Museum (Museo Arqueológico Azul Maya) is a small gallery that showcases original objects discovered across all of Guatemala’s Mayan regions. The museum’s founder established the exhibition after gathering artifacts while traveling extensively through the country. Azul Maya Archaeological Museum forms part of a family-run hotel. Relax in the courtyard and garden before or after touring the collections.

The granddaughter of the original collector will happily show you around and provide an insight into her grandfather’s life story. Find out where the pieces came from and how they were unearthed. Learn about how the founder made his fortune by selling many ancient objects.

Spot examples of ceramic bowls, plates and drinking vessels. See jewelry items, including bracelets and necklaces, crafted by hand from jade rocks. Admire icons of gods and mythological creatures. Marvel at a skull with a tooth encrusted with jade. Interpretive signs in English provide detailed information about the artifacts and their places of origin.

Contemplate your newfound knowledge of the Maya civilization while sitting in the peaceful courtyard café. Feast on everything from breakfast burritos to ceviche and homemade waffles. Sip a cup of organic coffee, a cold beer or a fruit smoothie. The sound of folkloric music permeates the air and enhances the relaxed ambiance.

Find the museum in the heart of Panajachel, a short walk from many of the town’s hotels. The town ferry terminal is a 5-minute walk to the west. Among other attractions here are the 16th-century Church of St. Francis of Assisi, the Casa Cakchiquel cultural center and handicrafts shop and La Galeria folk art gallery. Relive the history of the Atitlán region and its volcanic eruptions at the Lacustre de Atitlán Museum.

Azul Maya Archaeological Museum is open daily. Join other visitors staying to eat at the café.
