Avesta

Travel Guide

Explore the epic Swedish wilderness during your trip to Avesta, admiring huge coins, Dala horses and European bison.

Avesta is located in the southern part of the province Dalarna. This industrial town once produced iron and steel, and also has a history of manufacturing coins, which you can still see proof of in the area. Visit Avesta Myntmuseum to see the world's biggest coin, and stroll through the town's oldest district, Gamla Byn, where striking red timber buildings line the streets. The industrial history does not mean there is a shortage of nature – during a weekend in Avesta you can enjoy an abundance of outdoor adventures in the deep woods near Dalalven River.

Reel in pike, perch, salmon and trout, or go canoeing in the river. Discover Farnebofjardens National Park and enjoy the 18 hole golf course at Avesta Golf Club, which is renowned for its stunning surrounding landscapes. There are several places to go outdoor swimming, including Utsundsbadet, Sandvikabadet and Lillsjon. If you prefer a heated swimming pool, Metropoolen Avesta is a fun day out for young and old alike.

Marvel at the giant European bison and their calves at Avesta Djurpark, a zoo where important conservation work is done to protect the endangered species. Guided tours are arranged in the Bison Park and there is a playground where children can let off some steam. Visit the café if you want to try some delicious cinnamon buns.

The events calendar tends to be packed in the summer, notably Avestafestivalen is a funfair, market and music festival well worth a visit. Family-friendly activities are available at Horndals Brukspark, where you can go to the theatre or celebrate Swedish Midsummer in a traditional way.

Culture enthusiasts on a weekend trip to Avesta should pay a visit to the old ironworks Verket, which now serves as an art gallery with exhibitions that are often physically interactive. This innovative gallery displays works by international artists, and Avesta Art is ever-changing, so do not worry about getting bored if you have been here before. Enjoy dramatic plays, variety shows and other performances at Bergslagsteatern or Avesta Theatre.

Travel to Avesta by getting the train to Avesta Krylbo Station. If you arrive by car you will be greeted by the world's largest wooden Dala Horse at the entrance to the town.

Ok for a short stay
"Centre of town, part of shopping centre and close to bus station. Nice welcome at reception. Comfy bed, but very thick duvet and room too warm. Turned heating off completely and opened the room, in January. Temperature was then more comfortable. Kettle in the room a bonus. Breakfast reasonable. Rooms ..."

Overnight stay with work - very friendly welcome
"Overnight stay with work - very friendly welcome (we arrived quite late in the evening). Room was clean and well presented, if a little dated. Ample parking, dinner at the restaurant on site was lovely, complete with service with a smile. Breakfast was also perfectly adequate for what we needed."
