Amantea
Trace the history of this Tyrrhenian coastal town through its architecture, which spans from 15th-century churches to glamorous waterfront villas.

The seaside resort town of Amantea combines centuries-old grandeur with beachside beauty. Explore the medieval hilltop village, looking out across the modern expansion of the town and the broad beaches of the Tyrrhenian Coast. Learn about traditional ways of life in the old quarter of the former fishing village, which huddles beneath a spectacular fortress. Investigate the long waterfront promenade and hop between cafés, restaurants and bars.

Amantea is split into two main areas. The Centro Storico, or Old Town, is notched into the rugged hillside cliffs. Climb a steep flight of stairs or make the winding journey up ascending streets to the preserved medieval quarter. The Chiesa Convento di San Bernardino, dating back to the 15th century, has retained its Gothic character. Inspect the treasures inside or step out onto the piazza to enjoy the views across the town.

Continue walking along the terrace-like pathway wrapping around the hillside and check out Amantea’s Municipio (Town Hall) amid an intricate maze of twisting cobblestone alleys and archways. The 13th-century Chiesa Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi, the Chiesa Madre and the crumbling towers of the Byzantine-era fortress are architectural highlights. Relax on the grass of the Parco della Grotta.

The town’s modern area stretches along the town’s coastline. Stroll or cycle on the promenade running along the back of the beach and sit at a table at a café with an outdoor terrace. Try locally caught seafood paired with regional wine. On warm days, wander along the beach and dive into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Amantea is located on Calabria’s coast and is easy to reach by rail or car. Fly into the airport at Lamezia Terme, a short drive or train ride away. Amantea has a wide selection of accommodations options, from beachfront villas to charming boutique apartments in the old quarter. The town is busiest in the peak of summer between July and August.

Add Amantea to your Calabrian coastal trip to experience the town’s scenery and historic architecture.
