Located in central France, to the north of the Auvergne region, Allier is home to incredible scenery and peaceful spa towns. Relax in the charming town of Vichy, or head out into the Tronçais Forest for serene hiking.
Start your journey in South Allier, where spa towns provide places to relax and medieval villages dot the landscape. Go to the town of Vichy, known for its thermal waters. Try some pastilles de Vichy, candy made in the region that comes in different flavors including mint and lemon. Carry on west of Vichy and you will find a small village, Charroux. Marvel at its beautiful architecture and the courtyard in the center.
Discover the region’s history in Lapalisse, where you can see the Château de la Palice. This castle, built before the 13th century, contains artifacts from French life. Visit Chantelle to see the medieval Abbey of Saint-Vincent and follow the Sioule River for some gorgeous natural scenery.
Continue on to the north of Allier to discover the capital town of Moulins. Here, visit the Musée Anne de Beaujeu to see lovely paintings and sculptures and take a moment to sit on the grass outside Moulins Cathedral. If you drive north, you’ll find the Arboretum de Balaine, beautiful gardens that are laid out around a chateau.
Stay active by wandering through the Bocage Bourbonnais region. This area is filled with countryside and woodlands, which makes it perfect for discovering by foot or bike. Another natural option is the Tronçais Forest in the northwest of Allier. The forest is filled with oak trees and a few lakes and springs.
The closest international airport to most of Allier is Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport, which is connected by rail to the towns. Because of its rural nature, driving is the easiest way to travel through Allier and see the most of its gorgeous landscapes.
