The Alaska Native Heritage Centre is an intriguing institution that teaches us about 11 cultures that inhabited Alaska before European arrivals. The centre was set up in 1999 to promote self-esteem and pride among indigenous groups. The customs of the Alaskan Natives, who played a major role in the history of the state, are explained in the hall, museum and theatre. Discover six life-size dwellings for a glimpse into the state’s past. Speak to a guide about their construction and the day-to-day life inside. The dwellings are situated around the postcard-pretty Lake Tiulana. Stop for a picnic in the pleasant setting and discover the whale bones lodged in the ground at the Inupiaq site. Talk to the culture representatives at each dwelling.

The Alaska Native Heritage Centre is open daily in summer from morning until late afternoon. There is an entrance fee with a discount for children. Toddlers enter for free. The centre is closed in winter except for when it hosts various free events.
Drive 7 miles (11 kilometres) northeast of the city centre of Anchorage to reach the centre, where you can park for free. The journey should take around 20 minutes, as you pass the Russian Jacks Springs Park North. To the east of the centre you'll find attractions such as the Moose Run Country Club, Ship Creek and Cottonwood Park.
