Near a deep freshwater well, this fort provided protection for the critical water supply for the residents of the area.

Constructed in the 19th century and renovated in 1988, Al Rakayat Fort is a good example of the many abandoned protective defenses across the Qatari peninsula. Visit Al Rakayat Fort to see the typical design and construction that was easily achieved using local materials. The structure provided a defense against enemies as well as shelter from the sun.

The fort’s design is simple and functional. Notice the local coral, limestone and mud used to construct the lower level. Clay bricks were used for additional structural strength in the upper tower levels.

Peek inside the small rooms lining three sides of the fort and facing the open courtyard. Thick walls helped to keep these rooms cool during days of very high temperatures. The large rectangular courtyard at the center was used for daily activities.

At each of the four corners is a tower, with three of these rectangular in shape and one circular. Climb the steps to the top of the circular tower and walk along the ramparts to look out over the desert.

The only opening to the fort from the outside is a gate in the wall on the southern side. In front of the opening is a small building that was used as a mosque when the structure was occupied.

Look for the large green field south of the fort, which is often used as a camel ranch. You may also see wild ostriches, oryx or gazelles grazing in the area.

Drive to Al Rakayat Fort in northwestern Qatar from Doha in about 90 minutes. Rent a four-wheel drive vehicle to be able to navigate the sometimes rough roads of gravel and sand. The fort is open at all times and does not charge admission.

While in the region, visit Al Thagab Fort a few miles south as well as other sites along Qatar’s northwestern coast. Alternatively, join an organized tour with a guide who will provide additional insights on area history and up-to-date information on archaeological plans.

Always bring plenty of water when traveling to forts and other archaeological and cultural sites away from Qatar’s main cities.
