Aars is in the heart of Himmerland in Jutland, which makes it the perfect starting point for excursions to Himmerland’s countless historic sights and museums, as well as to the stunning scenery that thrives wherever you go.
One of the things that make Aars so special is the large number of historical finds of the area, many of which can be found in the numerous museums of the town. Make sure you don’t miss out on seeing the Gundestrup Cauldron during your weekend in Aars. This richly decorated silver vessel dates back to the Iron Age and was found in Raevemosen (The Fox Bog) - a peat bog. A replica of the cauldron can be seen in the Museumcenter Aars, which also hosts an exhibition on the Nobel Prize winner Johannes V. Jensen.
On your holiday to Aars you can also visit the Himmerland's Steam Railway Museum and the Danish Present-Day Museum.
You shouldn't expect luxury shopping and elegance while visiting Aars, but you can look forward to lots of fun activities like go-karting, gliding, golf, bowling, and last but not least, a visit to the tropical water park Dayz Ronbjerg. Make sure you also explore the countryside. Why not visit the Tvebjerg Nature Reserve, just a ten-minute walk from Aars town centre, where you can find a forest and a beautiful, calm, picture-perfect lake – an ideal place for hiking with a packed lunch.
If you prefer to dive head first into the Viking Age, you only need to drive 30 minutes from Aars to get to the remains of the largest Viking fortress in Denmark:Aggersborg. The fortress itself is pretty much gone, but a large circular rampart marks the area where the fortress used to stand, and you can see the interesting remnants from the castle in the adjacent museum.
Aars is easy to find, whether you travel by car or by public transport, as the town is only 37 miles south-west of Aalborg Airport. You can get to Aars bus terminal by bus 951X or 52 from Aalborg bus terminal in 40-60 minutes about twice per hour on weekdays and more or less every two hours during weekends. If you are arriving from the south by car, just follow the E45 motorway, turn off at exit 33 (Haverslev) and then drive the final 7.5 miles to Aars from there.
Choose Aars as your next holiday destination for its history, the fun activities and the peaceful nature which makes you feel like you have it all to yourself.
